Colts U13’s Fall to Strong Buccs Side in Athlone

The Colts U 13 team had a challenging assignment on Saturday the 7th of January when they took on Buccaneers away. The Buccs team was actually an A league side who had combined their A league and Development league sides. They had a combined panel of 29 players including some very large and strong players. The Colts U13 team traveled with 16 players, and sporting their brand new jerseys, took to the field more in hope than expectation.

The first half saw Buccs predictably making full use of their heavier bigger pack. They recycled the ball continually within their pack and bulldozed their way through the Claremorris team. The half time whistle saw Claremorris 22-0 down, having being somewhat over awed by the size of the opposition. However , after an inspirational speech by coach Mike Smith, the Claremorris boys found their shape and their resolved and went back out on the pitch  a different team. Claremorris scored two tries from Cian Campbell and Captain Jack Creighton versus only one try from Buccs. Jack Melvin also scored two points with a conversion.

And so it finished 27-12 to Buccaneers. Not a bad result for Claremorris considering they had travelled away to one of Connacht’s strongest clubs and played a team in a league above them. The U13 team requires more players for it’s panel. If anyone wants to play for the U13 team, give Eoin Colgan a call at 087 9190085.
