Connacht J2 League: Claremorris RFC 12-36 Connemara RFC

Although beaten the Colts Junior side finished their Connacht J2 league game in spirited style as they lost out to a more experienced Connemara side in Dunmore on Sunday.

The conditions were ideal for both sides as the sun shone  on the Galway border. A strong wind favoured Connemara in the first half and they used it to their advantaColts Juniors Ruck V Connemarage in the first half as they pinned the Colts back on numerous occasions. They used it to good effect early on when they slotted over a long range penalty after the Colts were penalised for hands in the ruck.

They extended their lead to 10-0 six minutes when they crossed in the corner after some good play among their backs.

The Colts started to gain a foot hold as the half wore on and were a denied a certain try IMG_8458when David Cosrgove was illegally tackled as he looked certain to score after great work from Rob Kelly and Liam Murphy. The Colts could not make use of the penalty advantage they had and Connemara managed to clear their lines and escape without conceding. Another long range penalty meant Connemara had a healthy 13-0 lead as the teams changed ends.

The Colts half time team talk made a difference as they had two try’s on the board within 10 minutes of the restart. Firstly a Moran Jennings break through the centre saw him offload to David Connor whose expertly found the onrushing David Cosgrove. This time he would not be denied and he touched down in the corner.

Their second try came almost intstalty, after a mix up in the Connemara defence Liam Murphy & Diarmuid Griffith combined to provide John Costello with the simple task of sliding in under the posts. Suddenly the Colts only trailed 12-16.

The Colts continued to exert pressure on the Connemara defence but could  not get the allIMG_8445important lead score.

A brace of penalties and two late tries one converted meant Connemara ran out comfortable winners as they secured a playoff spot while the Colts have to reflect on the positives they can take before a cup campaign which begins in the coming weeks.
