Claremorris RFC Tag League – Spoon & Bowl Final Preview

Games have been won and lost, battles have been fought and friendships have been made. But now, it’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for and the climax to the Claremorris Colts’ RFC Tag league is quickly approaching!

In early June, 14 teams and 168 players set out in pursuit of glory (or bragging rights). Now, after six thrilling weeks of action, all that is left is to find out who will be bringing home the silverware this Friday night, July 22.

Over the coming days we will be previewing all four competitions – the Spoon, the Bowl, the Plate and the Cup – and trying to determine who will emerge as the ultimate victor!

The Spoon Final:

This is the one they all want to win and it’s a battle of two very different teams. Simon Says Tag is led by Simon Cunnane, with his band of merry men and women made up of players who are all having their debut season in the Colts’ league.

Their league form wasn’t the best, however they were particularly unfortunate in a number of group games where, if luck had been on their side, they may well have got a few wins on the board. Nonetheless, one wonders how serious Simon Say Tag are taking this game as some members of his team have been overhead saying “Tag – sure its purely social”. And indeed it is!

Simon’s team now find themselves in the Spoon Final after a very close battle with the Hunks & Honeys in the last round. Their opponents on Friday night will be The Unbelievables. Captained by Kevin O’Malley, this team will be hoping to avoid claiming the ‘Spoon’ for the second year in a row, as a number of players on this team were known collectively as Tagnificent 7 in last year’s league. Indeed Kevin is quoted as saying his team “will be faster, fitter and leaner than ever before…just once I can get them out of Gilligan’s!!”

Time will tell but all we know is that this is one game nobody wants to lose!

The Bowl Final:

This competition poses the biggest question as four teams are still in with a chance of bringing home the Bowl. One has to say the Irishtown Yankees, marshalled by Noel Heneghan, will be marginal favourites as they fared best in the league phase with two wins and two draws from their six games played.

However the Hunks & Honeys, who also claimed two victories during the group stages, will be hot on their heels. And, rumour has it that their captain Jamie Burke has mentioned “free drinks for all” should the Hunks & Honeys go on to lift the trophy!

Standing in their way will be the Randy Badgers, led by local man Ian Walsh. A titanic struggle is surely guaranteed in this one.

Meanwhile in the other semi-final the Ninja Turtles will be hoping to stop the Yankees in their progress. The Turtles will be using all of their super powers to claim victory and their captain Peter Flannery will, no doubt, stop at nothing to ensure victory is theirs.

Both of these games get underway at 6.30pm with the winners playing off at 7.30pm for the coveted Bowl.
