Claremorris Colts 43 – 31 Connemara

In perfect rugby conditions The Colts welcomed Connemara to this top of the table clash in Ballyhaunis. The home side had targeted this game for a few weeks but didn’t make a great start when Connemara scored a try after just 2 min. This got worse when the visitors big centre scored two further tries which were converted. This left the Colts shell shocked 19 nil down after 10min.The big home crowd too were wondering what had gone wrong, however the Colts captain Brian Quinn decided to take control and responded with a great break from a ruck to score a try which was converted by Brian McGuinness, So a life line for the Colts which they grabbed with both hands. Phelim Brown was next to drive at the line and scored a great try with Liam Walsh adding the points. The home side were back in the game and were determined to stay there, some fantastic team play allowed Finian Brady to score in the corner and again B. McGuinness tacked on two points. As the belief spread around the ground the best attack of the day which showed off all the skills of the exciting team were on display when Steven McGreal raced to the corner flag to score again. No one expected Finian Brady to add the points from so far out, but with the kick of the day he did.

As the second half kicked off the home team expected a big backlash from the Connemara team, but with fierce defensive play that didn’t happen .Steven Mc Greal was first on the score board with a powerful try. Connemara hit back with a converted try, so the second half was more tit for tat and Brian Quinn scored another great try however the kicking gods were not shining on the colts and no conversions were added. Back came Connemara led by their big centre weaving his way through the Colts, he skipped down the wing heading for a certain try when Liam Walsh put his body on the line for his team with the tackle of the day .This was the moment that lifted the colts to finish out the game. Connemara added another 5 pointer, but Daniel Murphy had the last word with a try to finish off the scoring. So as we drew breath and the end of game that would have graced the Aviva stadium the Colts had won 43 to 31. To pick a man of the match would be unfair in such complete team performance, but notable mentions among the non-scorers were Jason Kelly, Dylan Jennings and Brandon Walsh.
