Claremorris Colts Lose Out in Connacht Rugby U15 Cup

The recent run of Connacht cup wins by the Claremorris Colts’ Under 15 team came to an abrupt end on Sunday morning last as they were undone by an excellent Sligo performance.

The Colts were dealt a harsh rugby lesson, finishing on the wrong end of a 67-0 score line. The game began just as the heavens opened and the rain did not let up for the entire 60 minutes. The weather did neither team any favours as the wind and rain made ball handling extremely difficult. From the kick-off Sligo claimed the ball and after a period of sustained pressure they crossed the line to go into a 5-0. From here until the half-time whistle the Sligo boys did not let up and ran in a number of tries to leave it 24-0 at the break.

Claremorris clearly knew if they were to get back into the game the first score of the half would have to be theirs, however that would not the case. Sligo began the second half as they did the first and crossed the Claremorris line for yet another try. Although the game was clearly beyond the Colts they kept going until the final whistle was blown and all of the team gave everything to the cause, including those who came off the bench.

One of those on the Colts side who caught the eye was their excellent captain Stephen Murphy who led by example from start to finish and thus ensuring all the Colts players kept their discipline to the very end. He was ably assisted by Cormac Hanley whose tackling was of the highest order right throughout the game. Clearly these lads are players for the future, and indeed the club would like to wish Stephen the best of luck in his upcoming Connacht trials.

The Colts squad should be applauded for their efforts throughout the year. It must be remembered that this is a team who were in their debut season, therefore second in the league and Connacht cup semi-finalist is a fine achievement.

The Colts would like to wish the Sligo the best of luck in the upcoming Connacht final.
