Connacht J2 League | Claremorris RFC 47 – 15 NUIG Rugby

The Colts Junior team enjoyed a rare day in the sun as they had a comprehensive win over NUIG rugby in their final Connacht J2 league game of the season.

It was the Galway side who started the brighter and they could have got the opening score but for a penalty effort that just sailed wide in the opening minutes. From the resulting play the Colts struck for the games opening try. Some fine midfield play saw John Costello give the perfect offload to the onrushing Paul Cunnane who scorched in under the posts. Paddy Finnegan added the extras to give the Colts the start they needed.

Try number two arrived five minutes later. Fergal Leonard made ground off a Colts scrum which saw David Bell cut through the NUIG tackles before feeding Dara McDonagh who crossed for this first try of the season. Outhalf Paddy Finnegan again added the extras for a 14-0 lead. The Colts continued to apply the pressure and Barry Deegan got his name on the score-sheet when the sailed through for the games third try. As usual Finnegan knocked over the conversion.

As the half wore on NUIG got into the game and they got a try in the corner just before half time to reduce the deficit to 21-5.

The Colts started the second half much better than their opponents and got two trys in quick succession Firstly Dave Cosgrove burst through the NUIG defence after good work by Paddy Finnegan. Finnegan then got a try of his own after side stepping the tackles before crashing over following good work from a Colts lineout.

Trys continued to come with both sides getting two trys apiece in the final 15 minutes. Dave Cosgrove again used that trademark speed to cut through the NUIG defence before touching down under the posts. Hooker Adrain Maye then got in on the act as he jinked his way through the NUIG 22′ to get his first try of the season. Dara McDonagh added the extras. The final play of the game saw NUIG touchdown in the corner as the Colts ran out comfortable winner 47-15.

Next up for the Colts is a date with Westport in the quarter final of the Ard ná Cregg cup.
